Mumbai: Kolkata Knight Riders paid for the pathetic batting as Mumbai Indians coasted to an eight-wicket victory at the Wankhede on Friday. Shaun Pollock was the wrecker in chief claiming three for 12 in his four overs to rip through the visitors' top order.

However, the opening batsman won his place back in the team after smashing 114 from 48 balls for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, an innings that included 11 sixes and nine fours. Opener Upul Tharanga was axed. Sri Lanka also included spinner Muttiah Muralidharan, who was rested for the West Indies tour.

Hamburg: Defending champion Roger Federer cruised into the semi-finals of the Hamburg Masters, beating Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-3, 6-3 on Friday.

Rome: American Venus Williams lost 7-5, 2-6, 3-6 to Serb title holder Jelena Jankovic in the Italian Open quarter finals on Friday while her sister Serena pulled out at the same stage of the tournament with a back injury.

Cristiano Ronaldo cast a shadow over the Manchester United's Champions League final preparations on Thursday by flirting with Real Madrid and declaring that he will make a decision on his future after the final showdown with Chelsea next Wednesday.

New Delhi: Doping scandal continues to haunt Indian weightlifting with another lifter testing positive for using a banned substance, according to Sports Authority of India (SAI) sources.

Karachi: Shoaib Akhtar could be handed a reduced punishment by the appellate tribunal which will resume the hearing on his appeal on June 4, according to highly placed sources.
 
•  England off to a sound start 
London: Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook shared a sprightly unbeaten opening partnership to swing the first Test in England's favour against New Zealand at Lord's on Friday.
